For the last 6 plus years there is kind of duopoly on mobile operating system by the American based Tech giant Google and Apple. Only Android and iOS both commulatively ejoying a 96% market share on mobile operating system platforms. Former Soviet Union and Now Russia wants to create more choices for Mobile users.
Russia wants to support the Samsung-led Tizen open source effort, and also Jolla’s Sailfish OS — which has been developed in Europe (Finland), and is an extension of the open source MeeGo project (although notably Sailfish is not (yet) itself open sourced).
Tweeting from a conference at the weekend, Nikolai Nikiforov, the Russian Federation’s Minister of Communications and Mass Communications, called for the “de-monopolization of the global IT ecosystem” — and expressed support for the Linux-based Tizen OS, tweeting a hands-on photo of himself using the “new open source operating system”:
In the same series of tweets, Nikiforov revealed the Russian Federation intends to provide grants to homegrown developers to migrate their apps from the dominant U.S. mobile platforms to Tizen and Sailfish. An online translation of his below tweet reads: “We give grants to developers who will migrate their applications from Android and iOS monopoly in independent Tizen and Sailfish”:
In another tweet he notes that the grants will be for Russian developers only — so the focus is on encouraging a viable local alternative mobile ecosystem while supporting Russia’s domestic IT industry — as you’d expect from the Minister involved. Where there’s politics, there is always economics.
Tizen:
Samsung released the Tizen-based Samsung Z1 to the Indian market in January 2015. The Samsung ZEQ 9000 was expected to be the first commercially available smartphone running the operating system, but its planned launch at Mobile World Congress 2014 did not happened.
Sailfish OS:
Sailfish is a mobile operating system (OS) combining the Linux kernel, the Mer core and proprietary software written by mobile software developer Jolla. Sailfish is being developed by Jolla in cooperation with the Mer project community and corporate members of the Sailfish Alliance. Sailfish is used in the Jolla smartphone, in the upcoming Jolla Tablet, and by other licensees. The OS is mainly targeted at mobile devices and is also intended to support other devices
